Gigi Paniagua December 14, 2017 Professor Curtis-Cummins Social Change In the book, Persepolis , by Marjane Satrapi, and Borderlands , by Gloria Anzaldua, there were social changes as these authors experienced growing up in different environments. Satrapi went through physical and emotional change throughout her life, starting with the war. She embraces her culture and stood up for what she believed in no matter how much her country was undergoing change. Anzaldua sees the social change when she compares her experiences from her culture and the United States. Both the authors experienced social change at a young age and grew up to be mature as they went through the Islamic Revolution or racism. Gloria Anzaluda 1. El Otro Mexico is about the border that distinguishes people based on their race. The author starts off by introducing the importance of the Mexican-American war. The author really acknowledges the fact that immigrants have their own names based on what the whites call them. For example, aliens or  savages. 2. 1. Hide and Seek This chapter is about Marjane giving up on herself and experiencing new things. She had to take in rude comments from people because of her race and background. She eventually got a boyfriend and became a drug dealer. Marjane changed as a character because she was went from a shy and innocent girl to a rebellious girl. The change Marjane went through was very new to her but she didn't mind. I guess you could say she didn't care much anymore and continued to stick with doing drugs. She smoked so much that her boyfriend, Markus, became very irritated. He started blowing her off on dates, not care for being there for her birthday, and eventually cheated on her. Persepolis 1. Persepolis takes place during the Iranian Revolution and Marjane is one of the characters that portrays what she has been through. In the passage, she was going through some sort of change in her life physically and emotionally. She went to study abroad in Europe and had encountered many hardships. She was homeless and was hanging out with the wrong group of people. Ta-nehisi Coates Between the World and Me 1. The first thing I thought when I read this passage was that a white police officer killed an innocent black man. I assumed that it was the usual incident that happens most of the time in my generation. This book portrays the difficulties African Americans have to go through in order to survive. Police officers or white people in general are privileged and the passage demonstrated how African Americans don't ever get justice due to their race. 2.  "Prince had been driving to see his fiancee. Researching my problem solution paper wasn't easy but I did learn even more information about my issue. Writing down all my ideas and information into it was pretty difficult due to the fact that I didn't want to sound repetitive compared to my last essay. I wrote about sex trafficking in third world countries and the different solution  we can do to help as an international community. There isn't much awareness about this issue and it has become one of the most important topics I have encountered. Seeing the difficult lifestyle most of these women and children have to go through is truly devastating and I hope to bring out awareness about this topic. Comparing this issue to my Book Club book is pretty similar because Persepolis is in a time of the Islamic Revolution. Women were treated unfairly like being forced to wear the veil, being disrespected in public, and the Shah was dangerous.

I wrote my introduction by introducing the issue I will be talking about and ways to prevent it. I made sure to include the lists of ways the international community can help prevent sex trafficking and help the victims of it. For example,  setting up organizations, educating young girls, and spreading awareness.

My bibliography research was not bad but could be better. I found interesting ones but not exactly what I was looking for on my topic of sex trafficking in third world countries. As of now, I am researching interviews and diaries of victims to really show true events and this this issue is a form of modern day slavery.

I think this book is very good choice to get references for essays. I think this book should be used because there are stories that could relate to your topic.

I think I did pretty well on the details on what I am writing about. I really like the topic I chose for this argumentative essay because not a lot of people are aware of this issue. Not only am I arguing why human trafficking is an important issue but I am also informing readers and see the opposing side of the argument. My only question is if I can use real life stories in my essay without using the book, since there are only a brief overview of stories, so I can show a better insight of this issue.

I am very content with the feedback given back to me. I did better than expected in my narrative essay. I do agree if I mention something then I do have to explain it a little or not put it at all.

The global story I chose starts on chapter nineteen and it talks about the lack of sanitary pads for menstrual periods. Most girls stay home from school because they don't have clean pads and they were too much to afford. The local story is that the University of Oregon uses a modern scanning machines to show that people enjoy giving better than receiving. They connect because giving and reaching out "when people are less unfortunate, it is important to help them, even if they are very different to us"(241).

They Say/I Say 1-3 1. In the first chapter, it starts off with Dr. X never really sitting why he needs to be stating his thesis. Basically, the lesson learned in this is that the writer needs to indicate their thesis clearly and also explain your response on what others say. In chapter 2, the authors discuss the art of summarizing. They state that it is important to summarize other's work and building off of others ideas to your own.  You should only be biased when your opinion shows up. In chapter 3, it states the art of quoting in which quoting is not rewriting someone else's argument into your own words. 2. 1. I think I did very well on writing down key information about the visual text and the story it is telling. I think they were trying to prove that she looks like a normal your lady that graduated from school, but there aren't any details on how her life was before she graduated or how she got to where she was. What motivated you to analyze the photograph you chose? I chose this picture because it looks like a picture you would find in a school's magazine or banner. What motivated me was that a picture can look normal, but there could be meaning behind it.
