Hide and Seek
This chapter is about Marjane giving up on herself and experiencing new things. She had to take in rude comments from people because of her race and background. She eventually got a boyfriend and became a drug dealer. Marjane changed as a character because she was went from a shy and innocent girl to a rebellious girl. The change Marjane went through was very new to her but she didn't mind. I guess you could say she didn't care much anymore and continued to stick with doing drugs. She smoked so much that her boyfriend, Markus, became very irritated. He started blowing her off on dates, not care for being there for her birthday, and eventually cheated on her. To add on, his mother kicked out Marjane from their house due to the fact that she was from Iran and assumed Marjane was using Marcus for an Australian passport. On the other hand, Marjane became her school's trusted drug dealer. She was an excellent student who often got along with teachers and didn't get into a lot of trouble. An issue she had was with Frau Heller, the lady she lived with. Her dog kept pooping on her bed and Marjane had had enough. Later on, she claims that Marjane is a prostitute and Marjane cusses her out in Persian language.

Discussion Questions

  1. How did growing up in Iran affect Marjane in socializing with other cultures?
  2. How would Marjane's life be different if she stayed in Iran?
