Reading blog #6: A Path Appears

1. This book is about people making a change in our world. A lot of the stories contained people suffering and in misery but they bounced back to prove others wrong.

2. 1."The challenge is to nurture a culture of altruism and empathy, seeking to imbue an instinct for social engagement"(15).
This quote really hit me because many communities don't have that good influence for the young people. Kids need to have a mentor and a goal in life to make a change in their communities. Terri Trent set a great example of this because she started out with nothing and came out with a lot to give when she reached her goal to become a doctor. She is an inspiration to many others, including me.

   2. "That's how a Californian woman, by donating  $250, underwrote the transformation of a life halfway around the world"(24).
The story of how a woman writing a check for a little girl to get surgery with clubfoot was one of my favorites. I didn't even know this was a common thing in this country, or even in any other country. I was very surprised when I first read that this symptom existed because I was totally unaware this existed. Giving back is always a good feeling to have because the person being helped has hope.

   3. "One reason many people feel poverty is a hopeless cause is that they think some parents are inevitably going to do a wretched job and that there is no way for outsiders or the government to make a difference"(60).
I agree with this statement because I honestly believe that the government doesn't do much to help the poorest of the poor. Instead of buying a million dollars worth of designer clothes, why not use it to buy clothes for the people that need it most.

3. What can I do in my part to help make a difference in my community?

Blog #9

reading annotation blog #9: Choose one story from the first 200 pgs or so and connect it to a main argument that the authors make throughout the book.  Use 2-3 quotes from pgs. 100-202 to exemplify your story and/or the authors' overall argument.  2-3 paragraphs. I chose the story "Attacking Sex Trafficking." This story talks about the struggles of modern day slavery around the world. Reverend Becca helps these victims by getting them out of the streets and their pimps, and helping them find employment by her program. The author's main argument is that modern day slavery still exists and is very much a big issue. Becca's program helps victims start their new lives and prove that change is possible. "One of the first women whom Becca helped was Clemmie  Greenly, an African American woman who had been taped repeatedly beginning at the age of five and then systematically pimped from the age of twelve"(157). Reading blog #10

They Say/I Say 1-3 1. In the first chapter, it starts off with Dr. X never really sitting why he needs to be stating his thesis. Basically, the lesson learned in this is that the writer needs to indicate their thesis clearly and also explain your response on what others say. In chapter 2, the authors discuss the art of summarizing. They state that it is important to summarize other's work and building off of others ideas to your own.  You should only be biased when your opinion shows up. In chapter 3, it states the art of quoting in which quoting is not rewriting someone else's argument into your own words. 2. 1. "Another way of opening up a debate involves starting with a proposition many people agree with in order to highlight the point(s) on which they ultimately disagree"(26).
